Nicholas James Gunn WINS Best Leading Male at the NODA Awards 2014

We’re delighted to announce that our very own Nicholas James Gunn has picked up the prestigious gong of ‘Best Leading Male in a Musical’
at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association awards, following his nomination in February. His win follows his critically-acclaimed portrayal of Bill Snibson in Blackburn Musical Theatre Company’s production of ‘Me and My Girl’.
The show ran at Blackburn’s Thwaites Empire Theatre in May 2013, and featured Nicholas as the leading man in Douglas Furber’s 1930s musical. The awards ceremony, which was held in Mercure Manchester’s Piccadilly Hotel in May, saw Nicholas up against eleven other finalists from the North of England, all competing for the prestigious am-dram award.
Nicholas, 22 years old from Langho, said “I was over the moon just to be nominated for such an accolade but to go to the event and come home a winner was a complete shock. Everyone down at BMTC has been fantastic ever since I first stepped into rehearsals as a 17 year old. There’s such a welcoming family feel that enables the whole cast and crew to enjoy rehearsals and performances alike. I’s brilliant for the show to be recognised following the hard work put in by everyone involved.”
Nicholas, who attended St Augustine’s RC High School in Billington and went on to study A-Levels at St Mary’s College in Blackburn, has been a part of BMTC since 2009 where he initially starred in the company’s production of ‘Anything Goes’. He has since played leading roles in ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Carousel’ and most recently, ‘Crazy For You,’ in May of this year. Recently, he has performed at Liverpool’s St George’s Concert Hall alongside world-renowned opera star and ‘The Phantom’ himself, Roy Wessensteiner, with other members of his musical society.
Nicholas’s talent was recognised over two years ago by local live entertainment agency, Actual Music, who provide and co-ordinate high-class live music for weddings and corporate events. Jamie Turner, managing director of Actual Music said “this is an excellent achievement for Nicholas and is thoroughly deserved following some show-stopping performances. His success is a great example of our commitment to developing local talent, especially in the early stages of their careers. He’s such a versatile performer, which is why our clients love what he does. It is a great achievement and there’s plenty more to come from him”
